Curiosity killed the cat, so they say. However, for AGL Media Group’s J. Sharpe Smith, senior editor of the AGL eDigest email newsletter, curiosity leads to sources, leads to stories and leads to delivering information to you. Smith shares characteristics with many journalists, namely, a desire to find things out, and then tell whoever might be interested what he found out.
Smith is a people person in a people business. Yes, it is possible to obtain information at arm’s length, meaning, from websites and news releases. No doubt, such sources form an important part of a newsletter’s menu.
Next in line, though, are the conversations, whether face-to-face (remember those days?), by telephone or, lately, video conversations and interviews. Besides the immediate result of obtaining information to disseminate, these conversations led to Smith developing a web of people upon which to draw for appearances at conferences, in Smith’s additional role as program director for AGL Summits — originally, in-person conferences conducted all over the United States, and more recently, as virtual conferences conducted via video connections.
Knowledgeable people making appearances and speaking at AGL Summits contribute to the wireless infrastructure industry’s access to firsthand information. Smith took advantage of words gathered in vocal form at the conferences to prepare written reports that made the information even more accessible to you, whether you subscribe to the eDigest newsletter or you read stories posted on the AGL Media Group website.
Smith wraps up his tenure with AGL Media Group today. As he departs for his next adventure, he leaves behind a roster of past and present coworkers who admire him. We admire Smith for his dedication as a journalist and editor, his talent as a storywriter and conference wrangler, and his good nature and generosity. We appreciate that he draws into the media network the experts who advance the wireless infrastructure business with the information they share.
It has been an honor working with a wonderful colleague like Smith these past years. On behalf of the staff at AGL Media Group, Sharpe, may I say to you, Thank you for the good memories that we shared together. Your work here will be an inspiration to others.
