Mobile network operators like Verizon and AT&T have spent money like crazy on fiber-optic systems to underpin broadband wireless services. They know fiber holds the key to deploying next-generation consumer wireless and enterprise communications. Tower companies know it, too, which has led some of them to diversify into fiber deployment. Some companies that own miles of fiber routes have become small cell providers.
