March 1, 2016 — Small cells are expected to be a big driver for dark fiber, the fiber lines that are just laying around, waiting to be leased. Several companies, including Verizon are seeing dark fiber as a great option for small cell back haul.
There is plenty of it around and Verizon is bullish on it. “Getting dark fiber out there, getting the small cells in there, that’s the direction we’re headed,” said Brian Mecum, VP of network for the West Area at Verizon, back in September. “That’s what’s going to give us our ability to deliver to our customers on the promise of reliability.”
Well, we’ll see. Just having dark fiber available isn’t enough. It has to go where it is needed and small cells are notorious for going to places where there often is no power or fiber. Just because it exists, doesn’t mean it exists in all the right places.
