Viavi Thrives as it Moves into Wireless Test & Measurement Products

By J. Sharpe Smith, Senior Editor, AGL Magazine

Viavi Solutions exceeded its expectations in the fiscal year fourth quarter thanks to a strong 5G wireless market and demand for its fiber products, according the company’s earnings call. The test and measurement business that Viavi purchased from Cobham Avcomm in February of last year also performed well during the period.

Oleg Khaykin, Viavi president and CEO, said Viavi is building on the success of the Cobham product line.

“We are leveraging our very strong position in the labs to develop and launch a comprehensive portfolio of products for the field, and a lot of those products are coming out in the second half of this calendar year,” he said. “It’s not just the Cobham wireless business that’s positioning us for strong outlook this year and continued growth, but also we’re placing significant emphasis to use that position to build out a meaningful wireless field instrumentation business.”

Viavi also finalized its purchase of 3Z Telecom during the quarter and will absorb its line of antenna alignment products at the beginning of next month. Enzo Dalmazzo, founder and CEO of 3Z, will continue to lead the 3Z team within the Converged Instruments & Virtual Test (CIVT) business unit of Viavi. It is part of the company’s plan to transition to include wireless instruments.

“We set the road map about a year and a half ago,” Khaykin said. “We are looking to change the profile of Viavi from being a primarily wireline field instrumentation to being a wireline and wireless field instrumentation business. And obviously, we continue to add other product lines and extensions to the Cobham business…”

Along with its product for aligning antennas, 3Z has unveiled a product that monitors the alignment of antennas in three dimensions: azimuth, down-tilt and roll, as well as a built-In antenna motion processor.

Samsung Selects VIAVI for 5G Network Equipment Performance Validation

In July, Samsung Electronics  selected the VIAVI TM500 Network Tester and TeraVM 5G Core Emulator to validate 5G network equipment performance, which marked the first wrap-around testing of 5G stand-alone (SA) base station equipment.

The TM500, a scalable test system for validating network performance as experienced by end users, includes uplink MIMO on two layers; downlink 8CC CA; MIMO support; 4CC uplink and downlink carrier aggregation at 120 kHz and 240 kHz; millimeter wave support; and support for large numbers of UEs on 5G in both Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) modes.
